T4 (levothyroxine) is a storage hormone; your body converts it to T3 as needed. T3 (liothyronine) is the active hormone, bypassing that regulation entirely. That is why T3 produces a faster, larger metabolic effect — and why it removes the control mechanism that makes T4 comparatively safe.
The physiological difference
Your thyroid mainly produces T4, which is relatively inactive. Tissues convert it to T3 locally, according to what each tissue needs. That conversion step is a regulatory buffer — the body decides how much active hormone to make and where.
Take T4 and you top up the reservoir; the conversion machinery still governs the outcome. Take T3 and you supply active hormone directly, bypassing that control. Every difference below follows from this.
Why T3 is used for fat loss
It raises metabolic rate directly and substantially. It works — that part is not in dispute.
The problem is that it is indiscriminate. Elevated T3 is catabolic to muscle as well as fat, and the lean tissue loss can be significant. Someone using T3 in a deficit without adequate protein and resistance training can lose a considerable share of the total as muscle.
Adequate protein, hard training and modest doses limit the damage. They do not eliminate it. See fat burning tablets for how it compares with the alternatives.
Your own thyroid shuts down
The same feedback logic as anabolic steroids. Supply thyroid hormone externally and the pituitary reduces TSH, so your thyroid produces less. Use it long enough and recovery takes time — occasionally a long time.
This is why T3 is generally used in short blocks with a taper rather than run continuously, and why stopping abruptly after an extended run leaves you hypothyroid while the axis recovers — flat, cold, and gaining weight easily. Precisely the opposite of the intended result.
The risks that matter
- Cardiac. Elevated T3 raises heart rate and cardiac workload. Combined with a stimulant such as clenbuterol, the load compounds — a common and poorly considered stack.
- Muscle loss, as above.
- Bone density over sustained use.
- Suppression, with a recovery period that is not always short.
What monitoring means here
TSH, free T3 and free T4 before starting, during, and after coming off. Without those numbers you cannot tell whether you are mildly elevated or well into a range that damages muscle and heart, because the subjective experience is similar across a wide band.
Both are prescription-only medicines in the UK. Levothyroxine is one of the most prescribed drugs in the country, which sometimes creates an impression of harmlessness — it is safe at a dose matched to a measured deficiency, which is a different situation from using it to accelerate fat loss.
Our liothyronine (33 lines) and levothyroxine (34 lines) categories carry both, listed as T3, T4, Cytomel, Thyro3, Cytomed and Thyromed.
Frequently asked questions
Is T3 better than T4 for fat loss?
Faster and stronger, because it bypasses the conversion step your body uses to regulate. That is also precisely why it is riskier.
Will my thyroid recover after T3?
Usually, given time — duration and dose are the main determinants. Short blocks with a taper recover more predictably than long continuous runs.
Can I combine T3 with clenbuterol?
People do, and it stacks cardiac load from two directions. If you do, blood pressure and heart rate monitoring stop being optional.
