Proviron: Not the Compound Most People Think It Is

Proviron (mesterolone) is described variously as an aromatase inhibitor, a libido drug and a hardening agent. It is none of those exactly. Its main action is binding sex hormone binding globulin, which frees up testosterone you already have. Understanding that explains everything else people report about it.

The actual mechanism

Most testosterone in your blood is bound to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and biologically inactive. Only the free fraction does anything. Mesterolone binds SHBG with high affinity — occupying it and displacing testosterone, which raises free testosterone without raising total testosterone.

That single fact explains the reports:

  • Libido improvement — more free testosterone acting
  • A “harder” look — partly the free testosterone, partly its own weak androgenic activity
  • Feeling better on cycle — particularly where a compound has driven SHBG up
  • Bloods that look unchanged — total testosterone is not what moved

Why it is not an aromatase inhibitor

It has weak anti-aromatase activity, and that is the origin of the claim. In practice the effect is far too mild to control oestrogen on an aromatising cycle. Anyone using Proviron in place of a proper aromatase inhibitor is under-treating.

What it does do — by displacing testosterone from SHBG — is slightly shift the free testosterone to oestrogen ratio, which can feel like better oestrogen control without lowering oestradiol at all.

It is barely anabolic

Mesterolone is a DHT derivative with very low anabolic activity. It will not build meaningful muscle on its own, and cycles built around it are built around the wrong compound.

Its role is supportive: added to a cycle to improve how you feel and how you look, not to add mass. Judged as a mass builder it disappoints; judged as a support compound it does its job.

The DHT trade-off

Being a DHT derivative means the same drawbacks as masteron:

  • Accelerated hair loss if you are genetically predisposed
  • Prostate effects, relevant with age
  • Finasteride does not help — it blocks conversion to DHT, and mesterolone is already downstream of that

See our finasteride and hair products categories for what does apply.

It is still suppressive

Mild androgenic activity does not mean no suppression. Mesterolone suppresses natural testosterone production, so it belongs in your PCT planning like anything else. It is not a bridge compound and it is not a recovery aid.

What we carry

Our mesterolone category runs to 41 lines, listed as Proviron, Mesterolone and brand variants including Provibol.

Frequently asked questions

Does Proviron control oestrogen?

Only weakly. It is not a substitute for an aromatase inhibitor on an aromatising cycle.

Why does Proviron improve libido?

It displaces testosterone from SHBG, raising the free fraction. More active testosterone, not more testosterone.

Will Proviron show up in blood work?

Not as raised total testosterone — free testosterone rises while total does not. A total-only test will look unremarkable, which is why free testosterone and SHBG are the useful measurements here.
